In 1879 Victor Tatin developed a model plane powered by compressed air that was capable of taking off under its own power. This was seen as a significant achievement at the time.

Before his unfortunate death in a gliding accident in 1896, Otto Lilienthal had begun to experiment with an ornithopter version of one of his gliders powered by a gas engine.
